The Assertive Manager is a course uniquely structured as an enhancement to traditional management practices.

Program Emphasis

The focus of the Assertive Manager course is three-fold:

  1. The assertive path to effective management

  2. Complete identification of personality and communication styles

  3. Emphasizing an assertive approach for dealing with people at all levels

  • Moral, diversity and change

  • Productivity, time and talent management and creating a learning environment

  • Top down approach to an assertive style of management

  • Assertive approach to passivity, aggression and Personal tensions

  • Integrative approach to strategic and tough decision making

  • A total quality management approach to problem solving and creating leadership at all levels

  • Emerging issues in the global economy as it applies to your organization

Program Structure

The Assertive Manager program is comprised of five, four hour modules conducted weekly at scheduled times. Each module contains the building blocks for building appropriate and progressive assertiveness.

Students will be admitted only at the beginning of module one, and a commitment to complete the program is required from participating students.

Curriculum

This course is enhanced by the:

  • Extensive professional experience of the participants

  • Unique accelerated timetable structure to cover the maximum coursework

  • A Principal instructor who is faculty experienced in teaching and consulting

In this seminar, participants will

  1. Be engaged in open discussion to analyze the characteristics of passivity, aggression and true assertiveness as it applies to management

  2. Develop a thorough understanding of the consequences of non-assertive behavior and actions

  3. Work individually and in small groups to learn to apply assertiveness skills and techniques to their role as a manager/supervisor

  4. Identify their habitual challenges and develop a course of action for inner personal change

  5. Identify their challenges with specific people and develop effective responses for them

  6. Role-play to develop an experiential understanding for real life situations

  7. Develop a personal mission statement and an outline for commitment to that mission

Session 1 - THE BASIC STRUCTURE OF HUMAN NEEDS

  • Survival, acceptance and potential - The Self-Actualization Model

  • The fundamental characteristics of passivity, aggression and true assertiveness

  • How people become passive and aggressive

  • Understanding our personality and how it developed

  • Recognizing the influences of personal history on behavior

  • Contrasting our personality and who we are at a deeper level

  • Identifying non-assertive behavior patterns

  • Recognizing subtle word usage, tonality and physiology

  • Creating a personal assertiveness profile

  • Improving moral, toleration to diversity and change during hyper growth
  • Experiential Leadership exercises to solidify session competencies

SESSION 2 - DEVELOPING PRODUCTIVE THOUGHT PROCESSES

  • Revealing mental structures and patterns of thought

  • Deconstructing the origins of habitual thinking

  • Examining behavioral payoffs and rip-offs

  • Taking control with productive thinking

  • Analyzing the sources and effects of stress

  • Overriding critical inner dialogue

  • Productivity, time and talent management and creating a learning environment
  • Experiential Leadership exercises to solidify session competencies

SESSION 3 - UTILIZING ASSERTIVE COMMUNICATION

  • What assertive communication really is

  • The basic assertive message

  • Advantages of assertive behavior

  • Identify and build on assertive communication

  • Identifying personality patterns of those around you

  • Strengths and weaknesses of behavior styles

  • How to deal with consistent and erratically difficult people

  • Top down approach to an assertive style of management
  • Assertive approach to passivity, aggression and Personal tensions

SESSION 4 - BUILDING YOUR ASSERTIVE SKILL SET

  • Identifying assertive role models

  • Defining your assertive style of communication and behavior

  • Building your professional authority

  • Giving and receiving feedback without tension
